Historical preservation
Scholars and activists are organising a seminar next week on the “Dilemma of Rattanakosin Conservation and Development” in a move to save the old Supreme Court Building at Sanam Luang, which is to be demolished to make way for a new structure.
The seminar, on October 10 from 1 to 5pm, at the Vanvaiyakorn Room of Thammasat University’s dome building, is to make the issue a public agenda with public participation. They view the demolition plan as unacceptable as the old building is a legacy of the popular architectural style during the People Party era, which was registered by the Association of Siamese Architecture as a conserved building. They argue that the new planned building will create visual pollution to the nearby Grand Palace. Instead, they urge the renovation of the old building.
Panellists at the seminar are Chatree Pakitnonthakan, lecturer of Silpakorn University’s Architecture Faculty, Phuthorn Phumathon, independent researcher, and Atch Srethabutra, a Chulalongkorn University researcher.
The seminar on the conservation of Supreme Court Building will be on October 10. Free admission, but registration is suggested.
