PM joins opening of new aquarium in Chiang Mai
CHIANG MAI, Oct 26 (TNA) – Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat travelled to the northern province of Chiang Mai to help open the world’s longest tunnel aquarium to boost tourism.
Welcomed by local residents in the political base of his brother-in-law, deposed ex-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Mr. Somchai presided over the opening of the Chiang Mai Zoo’s new aquarium.
The prime minister Somchai Wongsawat went to Chiang Mai after he returned home from Beijing, where he attended the Seventh ASEM Asia-Europe meeting.
The world’s longest tunnel aquarium is expected to boost tourism in Thailand’s tourist-oriented north. The new Bt600 million aquarium, with over 8,000 aquatic animals from 250 species on show, is expected to boost tourism in Chiang Mai, which is being considered as an alternative venue to Bangkok for the ASEAN summit meeting to be held in December.
