Software Industry Promotion Agency (Sipa) is developing a prototype based on radio-frequency identification (RFID) to support ERP and logistics development of the Hom Mali rice project. The project is expected to finish in September.
Sipa RFID project expert Pisit Sukphol said the agency is developing RFID-based applications for use between agricultural cooperatives, the Khon Kaen Bank of Agricultural Cooperatives, which is the origin of the supply chain, and the Khon Kaen Agricultural Cooperatives Comm-unity’s mill, where the supply chain ends.
The project will purchase about 500 RFID tags for the prototype, which will contain information about the origin of the supply chain such as dispatch date , weight and truck number.
The rice truck will be tagged at the time of loading. When the truck reaches the rice mill - its destination - the RFID reader at the mill will scan the information and confirm the receipt of the rice to the point of origin through a network.
Pisit said the agency aims to utilise RFID technology for developing logistics infrastructure as per international standards. It hopes to improve supply-chain management of jasmine rice for the Roi-Kaen Sarn cluster.
The prototype will also be tested on other agricultural products such as tapioca.
The pilot project will encourage local software companies to adopt domestic supply-chain management software instead of importing it from abroad.
It will also prepare traders to be more competitive in the global market as part of the World Trade Organisation.
“The RFID technology allows buyers to use the RFID reader to trace products from the point of origin, through production, logistics and the supply chain,” Pisit said.
Sipa vice president Santi Suraratana said the agency hopes RFID technology will promote Thailand as “the kitchen of the world”.
“It is necessary to set up a prototype to encourage local developers to provide products for export,” Santi said.
