Region to discuss warming
HA NOI — Regional co-operation on climate change will be the key issue at the first meeting of East Asian environment ministers in Ha Noi next Thursday.
Nearly 200 representatives from environmental agencies, enterprises and institutes in 16 nations will attend the meeting, sparked by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s initiative at the East Asian summit in Singapore last November.
The meeting will be based on the Singapore Declaration on Climate Change, Energy and Environment, said Le Van Hop, deputy head of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources’ Emulation and Reward Department.
The Singapore statement advocates using recycled energy and improving people’s awareness of how urbanisation can lead to environmental pollution.
Hop said that at the meeting, the ministers also planned to set up a centre for training human resources about the environment so that more people could contribute to protection.
A forum on environmental protection and sustainable development will be held in conjunction with the climate-change meeting.
Awards will also be made to 10 ASEAN cities for environment sustainability. Their success with environmental protection will become models for cities in developing regional countries.
Initiatives, such as using “green” energy for production and transport, and treating toxic waste will be addressed at this grand event. — VNS
