Ousted prime minister has applied for in Britain where he has spent most of his time since he was forced out of office two years ago, officials in London said yesterday.

The Home Office said Mr Thaksin applied for asylum when he flew into Britain in , breaking his bail conditions in a in Thailand.

“He applied for asylum pretty much when he landed … and so did his wife,” a spokesman said.

But the Home Office said it could give no further information on the progress of the applications because it does not comment on individual cases.

The Supreme Court issued a fourth for Mr Thaksin on Sept 26 when he failed to appear.

His wife, Khunying Potjaman, has been convicted on , adding to the legal cases piling up against the couple since Mr Thaksin was toppled.

Sirisak Tiyapan, for foreign affairs of the Office of the Attorney-General (), said even if the couple were granted asylum by the , the would continue to ask the to extradite them to Thailand if they were convicted by a Thai .

Nevertheless, Mr Sirisak admitted the process could be more complicated if the allowed the couple to live in because when seeking their , the would then have to prove to the that the conviction against the couple was not politically motivated.

Prime Minister Wongsawat has confirmed efforts to bring Mr Thaksin and his wife back are ongoing.

The prime minister’s wife, Yaowapa, is Mr Thaksin’s younger sister.

Mr said he had instructed his secretary-general to look into the possibilities of revoking Mr Thaksin’s .

(BangkokPost.com) - Britain’s Home Office has confirmed that deposed prime minister and former owner of Manchester City Football Club and his wife Potjaman have applied to seek and stay in Britain, according to Britain’s Sunday Mirror.

The ousted premier and his wife fled to Britain in August after skipping bail and failing to report for hearings on their corruption charges, prompting the Thai authority to issue them arrest warrants.

However, Pol Lt Col Thaksin claimed that he and his family could not get a fair trial in Thailand, and that he was concerned about his life.

In September, he sold Manchester City to the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) and profited three billion baht from the sale.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister and Defence Minister Wongsawat said he was not informed about Pol Lt Col Thaksin’s application in Britain.

He said he assigned his secretary-general to consider lifting the former premier’s .
