HCM CITY — Two astronomers, hoping to avert the current problems created by the worldly inventing new creatures, have recently discovered their creations are more trouble than they are worth.
Luckily, the unlucky duo are just the main characters of Nguoi Nam 2222 (Human Being in 2222), the first sci-fi play to blend Vietnamese traditional performance techniques with the sexy moves of phsyical theatre. The play opened last week at the Le Quy Duong Trial Theatre.
Human Being in 2222 was first written 10 years ago by Le Duy Hanh, a well known writer and winner of the State Prize in Creative Arts. Hanh plans to continue to edit and improve the script before it is translated into five languages and officially premiered to celebrate the millenial anniversary of Ha Noi’s founding in 2010.
The scientists’ quest for creativity and reform takes the audience around the solar system, from the earth to the sun and the moon and back, over five acts. While the husband finds success in inventing robots that can live on the sun, his wife brings human clones to the moon. However, the robots and clones abandon their creators’ goals of bettering human life, and threaten all of humanity with a world that is soulless, rootless and loveless. After destroying their brainchildren, the couple return to earth for a tentative “happily ever after”.
The play’s try-out features not only local performers but also celebrated international artists, including French composer Dominique Propst, Darrin Verhagen of Australia’s Dorobo Music Centre and Australian choreographer Tony Yap. Yap is currently in intense rehearsals with a young Vietnamese cast.
Le Quy Duong, the play’s director and producer, is a Vietnamese Australian director who made a name for himself at the Hue Festival and the Binh Dinh Festival.
“The play is meant to foster artistic creativity in Vietnamese theatre. Therefore, our targeted audience will be both Vietnamese and international theatre fanatics curious about modern and innovative art forms. We’ve set out plan to bring Human Being in 2222 to international festivals in Shanghai, Australia, France, and Europe. Our project is still open to welcome any actors or supporters who are interested in the play’s ideas and want to take part in it,” said Duong. — VNS
