A total number of 320 overseas Taiwanese representatives will join the 2008 Global Overseas Compatriot Affairs Conference officially kicking off in Taipei today, the Overseas Compatriot Affairs Commission (OCAC) announced yesterday.
The OCAC hopes that the conference can help the commission learn about the opinions of overseas Taiwanese on the future development of the nation’s overseas compatriot affairs, said OCAC Chairman Wu Ying-yi in a press conference held in Taipei yesterday to unveil the conference.
“Overseas compatriot affairs have always been an important part of the nation’s policy, and the conference will help the government to hear the voices of these overseas compatriots,” he added.
The 320 overseas Taiwanese representatives are from 58 nations worldwide, Wu noted.
The conference, the fourth of its kind in the 80-year history of the OCAC, is held under the main theme of “uniting overseas compatriots in order to promote sustainable management of overseas compatriot affairs,” said Wu.
It has been over seven years since the global conference was last held in Taiwan. The third GOCA conference was held in the year 2001 under the then-ruling Democratic Progressive Party.
The 2008 conference will kick off today at Howard Plaza Hotel at 9 a.m. President Ma Ying-jeou will attend the opening ceremony to give an opening address.
A total of six seminars on various topics related to overseas affairs will be held today and tomorrow during the conference to allow representatives to exchange views on these matters.
