Sri Lanka appreciates Pakistan’s generous support in fighting terrorism - Speaker
Sunday, 09 November 2008
Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara at a meeting with Pakistani delegation led by the Deputy Speaker of Pakistan National Assembly, Faisal Karim Kundi in Geneva, Switzerland, recently said that the Sri Lankan Government has exhausted all options other than to intensify the war against LTTE as the outfit was not prepared to lay down arms and have dialogue, media reports.
While appreciating Pakistan for its generous support in fighting terrorism, the Hon. Speaker said “We had tried every method including talking to the LTTE.”
Appraising the delegation on the government’s efforts to counter terrorism, he said Sri Lanka had suffered from terrorism for almost three decades. “An all party conference was also held to build a consensus on finding a solution to the problem,” he added.
Deputy Speaker Kundi was accompanied by Members of National assembly Nuzhat Sadiq and Yasmeen Rehman besides Senators Muhammad Ghufran Khan and Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani.
The Pakistan Deputy Speaker also recalled the “excellent relations Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy,” media sources said.
He told Speaker Lokubandara that the Pakistan People’s Party had paid a huge price for the restoration of democracy in the country as it lost its leader Benazir Bhutto to terrorism.
