Govt. dismisses LTTE’s latest ceasefire talks
Monday, 10 November 2008
The Government, dismissing the latest LTTE appeal for a ceasefire, said that fresh negotiations will be considered if and only if the terrorist organization lays down its weapons.
Earlier, the pro-LTTE Tamilnet quoted LTTE Political Head B. Nadesan as saying, “there is no hesitation on our side to reiterate our position that we always wanted a ceasefire.”
Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, pointed out that Nadesan had ‘conveniently forgotten that it was the LTTE that quit talks in April 2003, adding that the ground offensive is on track with the Army making steady progress.
Meanwhile, Defence Spokesman, Keheliya Rambukwells, said yesterday (9) that the people in the cuntry have had enough experience on the LTTE’s ‘double-standard ceasefires’.
The LTTE has on several occasions reneged on ceasefire agreements and has a track record of using such periods to recruit and re-arm.
