A HIGH school student is behind bars following the burning down of a teacher’s house last week.
Police in Morobe arrested the student who allegedly burnt down a teacher’s house in the Nawaeb district of Morobe Province.
The student was alleged to have set the house on fire over a previous conflict between two student groups from the Nawaeb High School, which was still tense.
According to police, the teacher’s house was at the Hubo Primary School and it was burnt down when two student groups from the High School allegedly clashed among themselves following a long standing dispute.
They said during the confrontation a student was allegedly chopped with an axe on the shoulder.
Police said the victim’s friends retaliated and went into the primary school where they set fire to the teacher’s house.
Morobe provincial police commander Superintendent Peter Guinness confirmed yesterday that one of the students was admitted to hospital while the teacher’s house was burnt to ashes.
“The prime suspect was arrested and charged with arson and the others were expected to be arrested.
“Police investigators are working around the clock to get those involved behind bars,” Supt Guinness said.
Meanwhile, a driver allegedly ran over a 34-year-old female pedestrian at Guref village along the Highlands Highway in the Markham Valley.
Supt Guinness said the driver was allegedly drunk.
He said the driver lost control of the vehicle which ran off the road and ran over the woman who was walking beside the road.
In another incident at the same village last week, a villager who was walking in the early hours on the road last Saturday was hit by an unidentified vehicle and killed instantly.
“This is a major incident and police are working on the case and also to identify the vehicle,” Supt Guinness said.
