THE people of the Highlands region now have access to diagnosing heart problems after the opening of the Loo Pok Cardiac Diagnostic Services at the Mt Hagen General Hospital on Tuesday.
Local communities made the vital unit available through a concerted financial support.
The heart scanning equipment and its accessories costing around K200, 000 was the first for a public hospital besides the Port Moresby General Hospital.
The Mt Hagen hospital serves patients from the Southern Highlands,Western Highlands Chimbu and Enga provinces.
Although the equipment would be used to diagnose heart diseases before being referred for treatment, the hospital said that it was faced with a drastic shortage of manpower.
Hospital chief executive officer Dr James Kintwa said the staff shortage was a problem in that every nursing staff served an average of 50 patients a day.
“We need more manpower in this hospital. The Government must provide more resources for efficient services,” he said.
