A PISTOL stolen from Kairuku-Hiri MP Paru Aihi was allegedly used by six suspects to hold up and gang-rape a girl at the Brown River settlement outside Port Moresby last Saturday, police said yesterday.
And while pursuing the suspects, police stumbled upon a large marijuana plantation that was located inside a food garden and uprooted 91 mature plants.
Two home-made guns and a cartridge were also confiscated during the surprise raid.
Police said Mr Aihi’s Sig pistol, loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, and a substantial amount of money were stolen from his car while he was talking with the settlers at the Brown River settlement last Friday at about 9.30am.
Mr Aihi was on his way to Port Moresby along the Hiritano Highway, when he ran over and killed a pig.
He stopped some metres away, left his car and walked back to a group of settlers to enquire about the pig’s owner to pay compensation, police said.
While he was talking with the settlers, some youths sneaked up to his unlocked car and removed his pistol and cash.
Police said the suspects used the stolen money to buy alcohol and got drunk last Saturday.
They then used the MP’s pistol to hold up a 17-year-old girl and gang-raped her that night.
“We went to a garden at Veikapu village near the settlement upon a tip-off that the suspects were hiding there at 5am yesterday while it was dark,” a policeman said.
“We realised that we were in the middle of a marijuana plantation when it was daylight.
“So we uprooted the plants, apprehended five suspects and also confiscated two home-made firearms.
“The other suspect escaped with the MP’s pistol.”
Police said they know the suspect’s identity and also that his father was a security guard with the MP’s security firm.
“We will also arrest and charge the garden’s owner for cultivating marijuana.
“He also fled when we arrived,” the policeman said.
