TAIPING : How does one celebrate the 125th anniversary of one of the country’s oldest government schools?
For old pupils of the King Edward VII School here, the past six months have been a flurry of activity, with students and old boys organising a procession in the city streets, a golf tournament, publishing a coffee table book and preparing an anniversary dinner fit for royalty.
The dinner on Saturday was graced by Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak, Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Bainun, Raja Muda Raja Nazrin Shah, Raja Puan Besar Tuanku Zara Salim, Raja Dihilir Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa and Raja Puan Muda Raja Nor Mahani Raja Shahar Shah.
“The school has had among its alumni two sultans, ministers and Singapore’s former president, Yusof Ishak,” said organising chairman Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Shukor Abdullah, adding that Tuanku Bainun had also taught at King Edward VII for two years.
Sultan Azlan also launched the coffee table book, King Edward VII Taiping: The First Century. Proceeds from the sale of the 1,000 copies of the book would be channelled to a trust fund for the school, said book committee chairman and Media Prima Bhd chairman Datuk Abdul Mutalib Mohamed Razak.
An oil painting of the school’s facade by old boy and retired art teacher Abdul Razak Osman, was presented to Sultan Azlan Shah as a memento of the evening.
Also present on the occasion were Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, British High Commissioner Boyd McCleary and state Education, Local Government, Housing, Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming.
