LDP-backed incumbent governors win Niigata, Toyama elections

TOKYO - Incumbent governors backed by the Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeito party won the gubernatorial elections Sunday in Niigata and Toyama prefectures, beating respective sole challengers backed by the Japanese Communist Party.
In Niigata, Gov Hirohiko Izumida, 46, defeated Eizo Yamazaki, 65, a former head of the federation of labor unions in the prefecture, by a large margin, garnering 759,936 votes against 138,099 votes. Voter turnout was 46.49%, a record low in the prefecture for a gubernatorial election. In Toyama, Gov Takakazu Ishii, 62, beat Kanji Kometani, 61, collecting 314,122 votes against 54,113. Ishii was also supported by the DPJ’s prefectural chapter. Voter turnout was 41.44%, up 4.17 percentage points from the record low marked in the previous election.
