Kanji mulled for domain names
Kyodo News
The communications ministry is studying the possible use of kanji and kana for Japan as a country code in Internet domain names.
Currently “.jp” is the code assigned by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which manages domain names and addresses on the Internet.
The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry plans to allow Japanese characters for Japan’s country code because ICANN is considering introducing Internet addresses in characters other than the Roman alphabet.
The ministry hopes to begin the system in mid-2009 after settling on new codes in Japanese and selecting an entity to oversee the registration of such domain names, the officials said.
