Ichiro Kato, prominent scholar, dies

Ichiro Kato, an eminent Civil Code scholar who served as president of the University of Tokyo during the turbulent days of student unrest in the late 1960s, died of pneumonia at a Tokyo hospital Tuesday morning, his family said. He was 86.

A Tokyo native, Kato became a law professor at the University of Tokyo in 1957 and served as acting president and as president when the elite university was embroiled in large-scale student riots in the late 1960s.

Kato also worked as a member of some advisory bodies to the government. He was head of a Civil Code subcommittee of the Justice Ministry’s Legislative Council when it recommended the introduction of a system in which Japanese women married to other Japanese nationals could choose to keep their maiden names. The change, however, has not materialized.
