Former Carp manager Lutz dead at 83
The Yomiuri Shimbun
Former Hiroshima Carp manager Joe Lutz died on Oct. 20 at the age of 83, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune of Florida.
Lutz joined the Carp as a coach in 1974 and became the first non-Japanese manager with Major League managing experience in the following year.
Lutz, widely known for asking the club to change the color of the team’s cap to red to symbolize the team’s fighting spirit, transformed the struggling club into one able to win the pennant.
Although Lutz left the club after only 15 games in charge due to a dispute with umpires, he is widely thought to have inspired the club, which was then led by Takeshi Koba, to win its first Central League pennant in 1975.
