Letter: Clarification from Komnas Perempuan

Regarding The Jakarta Post’s interview with Titiana Adinda, published on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, under the title of “Fighting Violence Against Women”, we would like to provide clarification on the statement regarding “how she fought for her right to get severance pay from the commission, which fired her without reason”.
Titiana Adinda was one of the key staff on the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) during the early years of its establishment. In January 2004 she became ill with meningitis. After a two-and-a-half-year absence, during which time the Commission provided compensation based on Indonesian Labor Law, we offered her a volunteer position. She refused and claimed that we were, in effect, firing her “without reason”.
In June 2006 both Titiana and the Commission reached an agreement on the terms of Titiana’s termination of employment, which included severance pay to respect her contribution to the Commission and to support her further recovery.
We are proud to see Titiana’s continued commitment and work to combat violence against women and wish her the best in achieving her dreams.
