Tannery gutted, crores lost

KOLKATA: A fire engulfed a three-storey tannery in Tiljala, spreading panic in the Maheshara Tala Road area on Thursday. The building housed two tanneries and residences. Though the fire did not claim any life, the financial loss could be to the tune of a few crores.
Eight labourers were the first to notice the fire around 8.30 am. Employees of Fu Leathers, they saw smoke in one corner of the building. They rushed out and screamed for help. “We noticed black fumes billowing out of a corner of the building,” said Nur Mohammad Ali, one of the labourers.
“None of the units had any firefighting equipment. Steps should be taken to stop such illegal units,” said Gopal Bhattacharya, director-general of fire services. A short circuit may have caused the fire.
