Mystery surrounds 8-year-old’s death
25 Oct 2008, TNN
CHANDIGARH: An eight-year-old girl was found dead hanging from a dupatta on a balcony grill in her Mauli Jagran house on Friday. Roshni, a student of Class II at a local government school, was one of the six daughters of rickshaw puller Chanderpal and domestic help Kiran.
Upon examining the crime scene, cops said the exact cause of death could not be ascertained, adding they were exploring all possible angles, including murder, suicide and accident.
Talking to TOI, DSP (east) Pushpinder Kumar Dhawan said they were investigating the incident. Quoting a neighbour, the cop said some children were playing in the corridor and Roshni was apparently trying to fix a swing there. The neighbours added they had seen the girl playing with her kid sister Chandni just before the incident.
‘‘I don’t think the girl was even aware about the concept of suicide at such a tender age. Moreover, till now, we have not got any evidence to establish that it was a suicide,’’ said the DSP (east).
Sobbing inconsolably, Roshni’s mother said: ‘‘She used to go to school… she was my dear child.’’
At the time of the incident, the girl’s father was reportedly away to Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh and her mother was also away at work.
The body was taken to GMH-16 and would be handed over to the family after the postmortem on Saturday.
