Maid tortured for eating almonds

CHANDIGARH, Oct. 16: Chandigarh may have the highest per capita income in the country but its record in the treatment of children is not nearly as decent. In a barbaric incident, a 10-year-old maid was allegedly beaten up with hot rods by a couple in Sector 4 after she was found eating almonds.

While the child is struggling for life in hospital, the police has registered a case under Sections 308 and 303, IPC against the accused, identified as Arun Singla and his wife Neelam.

The incident happened close on the heels of the death of a minor help under mysterious circumstances at the house of a businessman in Sector 17 a few days ago.

In that case the police had not registered a case as the parents of the child did not suspect any foul play behind the death of their daughter.

As per the complaint of Vasudev, father of the girl, Veena, she was thrashed by her employers and sent back in a critical condition to them at Kala Sanghia village in Kapurthala district.

He said Veena was sent to the Singlas as he was working at a factory owned by their relatives.

He alleged that the couple beat her up with hot iron rods when she was found eating almonds. They sent her home on Monday, he said.

According to reports from Jalandhar, the child was still in the ICU of a private hospital.
