PANAJI: Lifeguards across Salcete’s coastal belt in Utorda and Colva rescued several persons from drowning over the last few days. On Wednesday, life guards stopped a woman from committing suicide in the seas of Utorda beach and in recent days they managed to save the lives of four tourists in Colva.
On Wednesday, life guards saved the live of a 25-year-old woman who was found rushing towards the sea weeping and sobbing. Lifeguards on duty, Gurunath Sawant and Krishnakant Chodankar advised her not to go any further, but she kept moving away from them. Not taking any chances, the lifeguards brought her back to shore.
After calming down, the woman disclosed that she was a local from Utorda. She revealed that she had a fight with her husband, was depressed and wanted to end her life, lifeguards said.
Another local at the spot said he knew her family, and the beach safety management authority reached her home to her family accompanied by the local.
Elsewhere, lifeguards were in the thick of action at Colva when a 25-year-old tourist from Tirupati-Tamil Nadu was rescued from drowning recently.
According to the lifeguards, the tourist Nagraj Acharya was swimming in the safe zone, but was under the influence of alcohol. Nagraj was dragged by a wave and drifted out of the safe swimming zone. Lifeguard Howri Lamani rushed to the spot with a rescue tube and brought him to shore.
Earlier, a 22-year-old tourist from Gujarat was saved from drowning, also at Colva. Lifeguards said that Parmar Kiran was swimming between the red and yellow flags and saw a foreigner swimming a little further. Parmar started to swim towards the foreigner, but got tired and started struggling to remain afloat. Lifeguard Lamani swam up to him with a rescue board and put Parmar on it. Lifeguard Parashuram Pagui reached the spot with a jet ski and brought the victim to shore.
In another incident at Colva, two tourists from Chennai ventured into deep waters despite having no knowledge of swimming.
After realising they were in neck-deep waters, Suresh (25) raised his hands for help. On seeing this, his friend panicked and started struggling too. Lifeguards Lamani and Pagui rushed to their rescue and brought them safe to shore.
