Indian denied visa, Pak girl crosses over for wedding

AMRITSAR: Love, as the saying goes, knows no boundaries. In a case of cross-border alliance where the denial of a visa almost ruined a marriage, a gutsy 20-year-old Hindu girl from Peshawar took matters in her hands and reached here to tie the knot with her fiance. The wedding was solemnized on Monday.
About two years ago, Pawan Kumar, son of Dhyan Chand of Peshawarian Nagar here, had visited a relative in Pakistan and stayed with the family for sometime. During his visit, the two families decided on marriage between Pawan and Inder’s daughter, Anita. October 13, 2008, was fixed as the date for wedding.
Meanwhile, Pawan applied for a visa but his application was turned down. Not the one to be disheartened easily, Anita, who has done her intermediate, rallied family and relatives around her and reached the groom’s residence on September 26. Incidentally, the marriage party comprised 13 members from across the border.
A strong votary of Indo-Pak relations, Anita said, “Travel formalities between the two nations should be done away with… There are a lot of Hindu families in Peshawar who want to visit their relatives in India but are unable to do so because of bureaucratic hassles. Now that my marriage has been solemnized here, I wish the reception is held in Pakistan.”
Obviously unhappy with the turn of events, Pawan, in his early 20s, is upset that his bride had to travel all the way for the ceremony. “I wonder why politicians keep up this rhetoric of people-to-people contact when one is denied travel documents even for simple functions.”
