Husband sets woman afire in Mohali
25 Oct 2008, TNN
MOHALI: Domestic violence reared its ugly head on Friday when a man allegedly set his pregnant wife afire at their residence in Phase XI.
The victim was identified as Baljinder Kaur. Her neighbours rushed her to Mohali civil hospital from where she was referred to PGI. Doctors said she had sustained 45% burns.
She had got married to Niamat Singh, a salesman, about two years ago.
In a statement given to the police in PGI at about 9pm, Baljinder said, “My husband set me on fire.”
Their neighbours said the couple’s marriage had run into rough weather with time.
They said the couple had a heated argument at around 1pm, after which Niamat went out of the house. At around 1.30pm, Baljinder came out battling with flames and crying for help, the neighbours said.
They added that they put out the flames with water and rushed her to the Mohali hospital, where she was treated for about 30 minutes. “She was given the required treatment and when her condition stabilized, we referred her to PGI,” said surgical specialist with Mohali civil hospital Hemat Singh Ghuman.
Phase-XI SHO Deepinder Singh said a case under sections 326, 120B and 498A of the Indian Penal Code had been registered against Niamat and his parents. No one was arrested in connection with the case on the day.
Her neighbours said Baljinder was pregnant and had returned from her parents’ house a day before Dusshera after she and Niamat had reached a compromise regarding a previous household dispute.
