Don’t bring religion into terror attacks
IST,TNN
NEW DELHI: Criticizing the Centre for failing to intervene during attacks on Christians in Orissa, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury told the National Integration Council on Monday that the “same yardstick” should be used to deal with “organizations and individuals found to indulge in such terror activities, irrespective of their religious denomination”.
Veteran CPM leader Jyoti Basu, specially invited by PM Manmohan Singh, could not attend but sent a letter regretting that though his party had been “sending concrete suggestions to successive governments on the sensitive and important issue of national integration, we have failed to see the impact”.
He said there must be a change from the present policy being pursued in order to make the issue of national integration a vibrant reality and to keep the nation from falling apart.
Basu also said that an important component towards national integration would be a “move away from a US-dominated foreign policy”.
Yechury said the recent spate of terrorist attacks in Muslim-dominated areas had raised “genuine suspicions of a Hindu hardline response to some Muslim terrorist actions”.
Citing the probe into 2003 blasts in Parbani Jalna and Jalgaon, 2005 blasts in Mau in UP, 2006 blasts in Nanded, 2008 blasts in Tenkasi and Kanpur, he said, “Investigations in the past few years have noted the involvement of Bajrang Dal or other RSS outfits in various bomb blast cases. Internal security of our country can be strengthened only when all such cases are also probed impartially and with the same degree of intensity… Action against Bajrang Dal under the Unlawful Activities Act must be initiated.”
He added, “No persecution, as widely perceived by the Muslim minority, should be permitted.” Yechury also demanded invocation of Article 355 against Orissa and Karnataka governments.
