Chhay Rachna, an Apsara Authority archaeologist, will give a talk at the Ecole Francaise d’Extreme-Orient Centre next Thursday, October 23, about results of work at the Thnal Mrech kiln site at Phnom Kulen, 35 kilometres northeast of Siem Reap. This site has been known for more than a century as the only kiln site in the Angkor region, and its green-glazed pottery gave the name to the so-called Kulen-ware style.
Historically, the site was poorly studied and no excavation took place until recently. In January 2007 and March 2008, the Department of Monuments and Archaeology of the Apsara Authority, together with the National University of Singapore, worked on two kilns of Thnal Mrech. The presentation, in English and beginning at 6:30pm, will describe the archaeological works and some results, including suggestions of dates for the discoveries ranging from the mid-10th to early 13th century.
