Promote maritime industry careers among youths

CAREERS in the maritime industry need to be promoted and encouraged to young generations in Brunei, said the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (R) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud said that careers in the maritime industry, both at sea and onshore, need to be promoted to deliver a quality workforce.
“Rigorous training and high standards will continue to deliver a quality workforce, and the industry should sell itself to young generations on that basis,” he said.
Speaking during yesterday’s Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO) conference, he said that identifying gaps and opportunities are crucial in keeping up with new global shipping developments to secure the future of Brunei’s shipping and tankers industry.
He also stressed the importance of sea-lanes and waterways of the Asia-Pacific entrusted with safety delivery to their destinations.
“We cannot allow our ports and ships to be threatened by any form of negative activities and be vigilant about the problem of sea crimes that exists in some parts of the world,” he stated.
He said the importance of these issues can be addressed during the conference in which its objective was to ensure an efficient, secure, predictable system of world trade through engaging and interacting with one another.
The conference was aimed to enhance collaborations in achieving common objectives and continuously improving the quality of services of services in the oil and gas, and shipping industry.
The two-day event is being held at the Indera Kayangan Ballroom at the Empire Hotel and Country Club and was attended by permanent secretaries, senior government officials and various stakeholders of the oil and gas industry.
The event was organised by Brunei LNG Sdn Bhd (BLNG) and was attended by more than 120 delegates worldwide, consisting of the world’s LNG businesses and more than half of the global liquified petroleum gas (LPG) business.
SIGTTO was formed as an international organisation where all participants from the industry will exchange experiences, address common problems and derive agreed criteria for the best practise and acceptable standards.
The main purpose was to promote high standards and best practises among all industry members and to maintain confidence in the safety of the liquefied gas industries as well as to maintain their acceptance by the society at large as responsible industrial partners.
According to Brunei LNG, by January 2010, Brunei Gas Carriers (BGC) in collaboration with its current ship manager, Shell International Trading and Shipping Company (STASCO), will establish Ship Management Division.
The BGC joined the society in 2006 and this will be its first step to realise its vision of becoming a Ship Management Company.
