Ex-health minister Phuong dies at 71
HA NOI — Former Minister of Health Do Nguyen Phuong died last Friday in the capital city from a sudden heart attack at the age of 71.
Phuong was also former member of the Communist Party of Viet Nam’s Central Committee, former National Assembly deputy, former vice director of the Ho Chi Minh National Politics Academy, and deputy chairman of the Viet Nam Central Elderly Association from May, 2007.
Born in 1937 in Tay Ho District in Ha Noi, Phuong graduated from the Ha Noi Medicine and Pharmacy University in 1960, and went on to get his doctorate in the Soviet Union.
During his working years, Phuong paid attention to the health of the poor and started a lot of policies still in effect today.
As the result of his commitment to the country, the State and the Party had rewarded Phuong with the Independence Order, First Class; the Anti-American War of Resistance Order, First Class; the Labour Order, First Class; the insignia for his 40 years’ Party membership among other distinctions.
Phuong was also awarded with the Order of Freedom from Laos.
Phuong will be buried in Mai Dich Cemetery in Ha Noi tomorrow afternoon. — VNS
