International airfares are expected to see a drop of 89,500 won from next month as air carriers will apply lower fuel surcharge penalties from November.
South Korea’s two largest carriers, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, announced yesterday (October 2) that they will lower fuel surcharge rates applied to international routes from stage 25 to stage 16 from November. They have asked for authorisation from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs to make the change. Under the new rates, a one-way ticket to the United States and Europe will see a price drop of US$81.
Airfares to China and Southeast Asia will fall by $36 and to Japan, by $18.
For domestic flights, the surcharge will fall by four stages, dropping to 12,100 won from 17,600 won.
